VR Equitypartner

50 years’ experience with mezzanine financing, minority shareholdings and majority acquisitions

VR Equitypartner is one of the leading equity investors for medium-sized companies (the so-called Mittelstand) in Europe’s German-speaking countries. We support medium-sized family companies in implementing growth plans, financing expansion, in company succession matters and with changes to shareholder structure. This can be in the form of majority and minority shareholdings and with mezzanine capital .

As a subsidiary of DZ Bank, the parent holding of the cooperative banking group, we are part of a large cooperative network. A spirit of partnership and sustainable corporate development are integral to who we are. An open approach, trust in each other's strengths and competencies and a sense of responsibility are part of our corporate culture. We see ourselves as financiers of the Mittelstand and not as investment bankers. We are not tied to pre-determined exit time frames and we support our companies for as long as it takes - which can sometimes be up to 12 years and longer. We adopt the same sustainable approach when it comes to debt financing: We assess the financial capacity of every company and make sure that the level of debt never impinges on the company’s room for maneuver.

With 50 years’ experience (our predecessor company was founded in 1970) and over several hundred engagements over that time, our accumulated know-how and experience can help you take your company forward, realize your objectives and find strategic solutions to complex financing issues. At present, our portfolio comprises some 100 companies with a total investment volume of EUR 500 million.

Our success is an endorsement of our partnership approach: A look at our current portfolio (status as of end 2019) shows not only that sales at most of our majority and minority shareholdings are up significantly, or very significantly, but also the number of employees.

What sets us apart

No pressure to sell our holdings and a broad network of reliable financing partners: VR Equitypartner’s investments are funded entirely by DZ Bank AG and we are therefore not subject to the requirements of fund-based refinancing.

This has three key benefits for you:

  • Long-term approach: We stay at your side for a long as it takes and as long as it makes sense to do so - because we do not have to consider fund investments and realization periods.
  • Invest in on an ongoing basis: We do not have to rely on successful fundraising but can invest DZ Bank’s equity on an ongoing basis.
  • Reliable, strong financing partners: As part of the cooperative financial group Genossenschaftliche FinanzGruppe, we have access to an established and reliable financing network of almost 1,000 cooperative banks - one of the largest private financial services organizations in Germany (based on balance sheet total).

The benefits

of partnering with VR Equitypartner

Long-term orientation

Together, we achieve long-term added value for your company. This puts you in a strong position to develop and implement growth opportunities.

A partnership

We can support you with management know-how, our international network of experts and opportunities that are exclusively available to our portfolio companies - for example, when looking for skilled employees. Success is a combined effort.

Committed and flexible

VR Equitypartner is not a fund, which means we are not obliged to bow to any yield-driven selling pressure and you can be confident of our support for as long as necessary. This way, all parties have the flexibility to realize joint plans without undue time pressure.

Our services

With mezzanine financing you combine the advantages of equity and debt - together with high flexibility with regards to important conditions. You can fund long-term investment plans or strengthen the company's capital structure without having to relinquish any company shares.

Direct investments

As an equity investor valued for our expertise and reliability, we support companies in the implementation of their growth plans. At the same time, you - the entrepreneur - continue to enjoy operational and decision-making freedom. Whether we hold a majority or minority stake, we do not interfere with day-to-day management and we remain a temporary shareholder.

Regional offering

Small and medium-sized innovative tech and growth companies can strengthen their economic base with mezzanine and direct investments of up to 1.5 million euros. To this end, VR Equitypartner, together with the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs and Media, Energy and Technology, has set up a fund with a double-digit million euro volume.

Our commitment to social responsibility

We began supporting the child protection project Bethanien Kinder- und Jugenddorf, (Bethanien village for children and adolescents) in Eltville-Erbach, in 2015.The village offers a home to about 100 children and adolescents who, for various reasons, are no longer able to live with their birth families. We finance a music project for the children which enables them to have ongoing music lessons. Children love music and this project also helps them gain in self-confidence. What is more, the choir and orchestra give them a shared feeling of success and reinforces their sense of community.

The support association „Kinderzukunft Fördern e.V.“ is deeply committed to the children and adolescents (about 340 in total) , who live in the three Bethanien Kinderdörfer in Eltville-Erbach, Schwalmtal-Waldniel and Bergisch Gladbach-Refrath. For around 60 years, the villages have been providing new homes to boys and girls from families where they experienced neglect, violence or drugs. In these villages, the children live in a stable, family-like environment that gives them the stability they need to move on and lead happy and independent lives in our society.
